MomoCon is Georgia Tech’s yearly anime convention, run by Tech’s anime club, which both my husband and I attend. This year the theme is dinosaurs, and when I joined the MomoCon media staff, I learned that they needed people to supply art that they could use on programs or other places. So after a brain storming session with the head of the media department, I came away with some great ideas and got to work.

I submitted these four cosplaying dinos, and three of them were picked to be displayed in the program! (Sadly, lack of space kept the last one out.) As a reward, I won a free ticket to MomoCon, a free con tshirt and some other goodies.

Made in Illustrator. Took inspiration from dino images and anime characters found on Google.

November 5th, 2011 was the day I married my sweet, computer-programming knight, James. Of course, like any designer going through wedding planning, I wanted to do my own print materials!

Our colors were an orchid pink and turquoise, and the biggest accent was the peacock feather, which we put (tastefully) in flower arrangements, bridesmaid’s bouquets and the groom’s boutineer. I had lots of green and deep pink and purple in my bouquet, and I wore an ivory-white wedding dress that used to be my mom’s, tailored to fit me in shape and personal style. The girls wore orchid Grecian-style gowns, and the men wore black tuxes with gray ties and vests, while the groom’s were an emerald green.

Okay, you get the idea. ^_^ Here’s the save the date, the service program, and the brochure about us we gave to everyone at the reception.

I have a slip from a fortune cookie that reads “You could prosper in the field of medical research.” I’ve kept it because of the irony…and the fact that I did once, if only briefly.

When I was working at Meharry Medical College, I was the local expert in my department on social networking, and with permission, began implementing it alongside web portals I was designing that were aimed at informing and engaging the community.

One of my colleagues, Bob Levine, suggested that I write a thesis on the topic of social networking in the medical field in conjunction with what I was doing with the portal sites. The RCMI Symposium was coming up, and it would be in Nashville that year. Lots of others from Meharry were entering theses: it was the perfect opportunity! So I did, and as Bob had much more experience in these matters, helped edit and revise my main ideas to make me sound like a scientific researcher. I wouldn’t have gotten far without his fantastic help.

Bob entered it for me, since he knew the process, and after a few months of waiting, I was thrilled to learn that my thesis was accepted! This meant I needed to design and print a poster that illustrated my thesis, which would be hung up in a presentation room among other fortunate submissions. I didn’t have to actually present anything in front of an audience, just to curious symposium attendees passing by.

So, in December 2010, there I was, a designer with a passion for social networking and the internet at large–who struggled with math and science all through school, I might add–rubbing shoulders with Ph.D.s and MDs and other scientific researchers from the US medical community, and some from around the world. It’s probably my biggest professional honor that I never imagined I would get.

The Post-Apocalyptic Blues Band (the P.A.B.B.) was a college band that I did some print design for during my senior year in college. I even got to do a photoshoot with them to use the pictures for the posters and CD art.

As their name suggests, they wanted an edgy, cobbled together from scraps kind of look, evoking that they’d survived the apocalypse and that they’d have to advertise with what was left, like torn paper and a label maker.

Did some minor web design prompts for them that never went anywhere, but I’m still proud of the header I made for them in Flash (coming soon).

I worked on this website when I was in the Biomedical Informatics MeTRC Core at Meharry Medical College. I was the primary designer and one of my colleagues did the programming and CMS management.

This site was created in response to Hurricane Katrina’s devastating touch-down in New Orleans, and its goal was to better inform people how to be prepared for natural disasters. In addition to information about different types of natural disasters, it would keep up-to-date with weather news for local areas, and display maps with marked establishments, and would show evacuation routes and destroyed buildings.

Unfortunately, the grant for the project was canceled before the site was completed, but there was a lot done design-wise that I worked very hard on.

This was one of the first sites I worked on using the CMS Plone, and I was able to sharpen my CSS, Photoshop and Illustrator skills as well.

I wanted something simple for the header that reminded people of the site’s purpose without being frightening, and with the logo design I wanted the weather radar look that is so reminiscent when it comes to big storms. The green added more color to the rest of the site (echoed in the globe logo) and gray highlighted the storm clouds.

This is a site design I did for a friend’s small video production company.

Their name “Shoebox Story” inspired me to make a site that seemed to be built from odds and ends you’d find in a shoebox, like old photos, scraps of paper, doodles, documents and old letters.

As for the palette, they said they wanted something earthy, and faded colors seemed a natural choice.

I also did work on the header and the design for their Blogger blog.
